Racial Profiling and Police Brutality: How does it affect us?

During Thanksgiving break, my friend and I went to Austin to visit and hang out. This was around the time of the Grand Jury's decision not to indict Darren Wilson, a white police officer who fatally shot Mike Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager, in Ferguson, Missouri.  My friend and I were at the Museum of the Weird looking at Big Foot when we heard the protesters outside.  I  heard some comments of people in the store that said "Why are they protesting? It doesn't even affect us!".  Do you think that what happened in Ferguson, Missouri is important to us all around the country? How does racial profiling and police brutality affect you? Do you think that protesting is important way to create change?

  1. I honestly had not heard about Mike Brown until the protesting that day. I do think it's important to talk about it because we are all affected in one way or another. For example, my community has a history of police violence and I think people need to speak up and fight to stop it. I don't think all police are violent and I have family members who are really great police officers. However, I do think people are targeted because of how they look or their race and treated unfairly by police.

I want to know what you guys think. Just make sure to think before you write and be respectful! I will delete any disrespectful comments and you will be deducted points. Comment below!

  2. i say protesting is right because we all want something you know and Missouri is important to us. The racial profiling affects me because its not fair to be racist we all have our freedom

  3. yes because every one's getting tired of the police doing whatever they want just because they have a badge and shooting black people because of there color and getting away with it. So I do think protesting is a good idea.

  6. Protesting helps but at the same time it doesnt because back in the early 1900s when people protested it made things worse.

  7. I think protesting is helpful even if the problem wasn't particularly in the same location because if we don't do nothing to try to stop it the situation will keep going and never stop.

  8. I think what happened was bad because the guy was unarmed and he didn't do nothing wrong and protesting is needed.

  10. i think it does because because there are a lot of police officers have been in jail for that. but Ferguson's way of protesting is wrong because they are creating more harm then what actually happen.

  11. It doesn't affect me but i do think that protesting is needed because if people don't get what they need and when your protesting its like your speaking out your own opinion and sometimes people all over the world might agree with you.

  12. Joel: I believe that a peaceful protest would effect the country unlike a riot because if society just throws a fit, then they shall not get what they want, however, the police also need to calm it down.

Ps: Police brutally is not cool

Protesting is fine and can make change but not how it is right now, thats not protesting that is rioting

  13. I think that what happened in Ferguson is very important because it shows how (some) police officers can get away with police brutality. Many unarmed black people have been murdered by police officers and the officers have gotten away with it, and it needs to stop. I also believe that Darren Wilson should have been indicted. Shooting an unarmed black teenager and not having any consequence for it is absurd.

  14. is this the 1960s or something because its the same concept anti war anti government. the only things that get media are the cops shooting different races they don't air why they did it or what caused it. they have there reasons for doing what they do trust me the news wants a negative reaction. our blood colors the same so the protesters are the racists not the cops. the news leaves parts out to cause. this reaction they even make self defense cases look like murder

  15. moses: i think both a peaceful and a violent protest of the mike brown case would be reasonable to the african people and to the people who believe that the cop should be hanged but either way his life doesnt just lie on the court but also on the people.

  16. Protests can make a change. However, riots only make the situation worse than how they originally were. It's the same thing with children and parents. I child cannot receive anything from the parent when the child throws tantrums, but if the child begins to behave according to the parent's norms, that is when the child will start to see a change and begin to receive what it wanted from the start.
In my opinion, I don't think police brutality is a big deal. The media may create an illusion and state several things that might not even be exactly how a certain event had happened. Bad policemen do exist, but the majority are actually out on the streets trying to protect the people on the streets and themselves from possible dangers...

  18. i think that what happened in Ferguson,Missouri is important around the country because people need to know about this type of stuff.i have heard of police officers getting away with crime just because they are the police and they have a little power .if people hear about this, they could change the world .i think racial profiling and police brutality does affect me and other people because the more police officers that get away with it will make other police officers think they can get away with anything they want to .so that will cause more accidents like will keep happening .so that means anyone will get hurt like my family or anyone else family.yes i do think protesting will create change because the more people that protest the more uproar.so that means change will have to be mad and the more everyone sticks to gather we can change everything .p.s. i feel so sorry for the family how lost there son .i will pry for them .no one deserves to lose there family and kids.

  19. what happen in missouri affect all of the United States because we are a unit,a teem if it affects one of us it affects all of us! we should be able to dress the way we want without being judged!we need to be protected by the police not attacked by them!! we have the freedom of speech so we should use it to our advantage! they shouldn't act like violence that's not the way marther luther king thought us! If the cop killed him for his skin color then that's racist! EQUAL RIGHTS! WE HAVE TO BE HEARD !WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO FEEL SAFE!

  20. There are some cops that protect us, while on the other hand try to destruct us. In this case, Officer Wilson, destructed a human being, who hasn't been notified what for. Personally, I think that you have a right to share you're opinion to the world. and i agree with protesting, I believe that just because the negative things that are currently happening in Ferguson right now makes a huge impact on everyone today. just because its not happening near where you live, it can affect us in many ways. ---------- EVELYN BYLER
