Students Speak Out

This past week, TEA announced that they were revoking the charter of 14 charter schools in Texas. Schools are being closed for either low test scores or failing the financial accountability. Some charter schools are fighting the decision.  What a lot of people don't know is that there has been a big debate since charter schools opened in the 1990s. One side claims that students should be allowed a choice of school when they are not finding a suitable education in their district public school.  Others have claimed that charter schools are taking money from the bigger public schools and really are not helping students.  Some feel that charter schools are beneficial to students because they allow small class sizes and are meant to be innovative in their teaching.  Politics are very much involved in what is going on with charter schools and public schools, but many are not asking the students what they think.  So, now is your time to speak out.  What do you think about charter schools possibly shutting down? Do you think there are benefits to charter schools versus public schools? Speak out below. Remember to be respectful and check your grammar before posting.

  1. I honestly don't know what to think, and I don't really care what school i go to. All i want to do is graduate high school, and go to college. But at the same time i want to stay in this school, and graduate just like my brothers did, but if they closed it then i can't really do anything about it. I can't really say that charter schools have more benefits than public school, because i never been to a public school before, so I don't know what to think.

    1. I went to a bigger public school when I was in high school and it is very different. I think there will always be charter schools around and there should be choice. Regardless of what happens, you will be fine!

  3. I think this school is going to be revoked, I hope it doesn't because there is some nice teachers here that are going to be unemployed. I don't think there is any benefits to charter schools, even though we have less students than a public school it is like worse than public schools because no one here pays attention when the teachers is teaching and I can barely listen to the teacher, in public schools there is like 25 students and everyone can get noisy but the the teacher shuts us up, We lack a gym, library, good food, neat rooms and hallways. As to where public schools do have.

    1. You bring up a good point, Erik. Though, a little birdie told me you are the one that makes the most noise in that class!

  5. i don't think they should close the charter schools, because some kids need to be in a small class to stay focus and understand more of the work. I think there are some benefits to charter schools and public schools.

    1. I agree. It does help with focus because your teacher has fewer students to focus on.

  6. I don't think they should shut down charter schools because some students might like the charter school there already at and don't want to move schools. Also other schools have more classes and that are harder but the the school I'm at has four classes and there easy and i love this school all my friends are here and if i move i would be lost at other schools, sure i know some students there but i don't talk to them and my best friend helped me get thought this school because she knows this school better than me. I just hope they don't shut down the charter schools because i would be lost at other schools, wouldn't you?

  7. As a kid who's been going to charter schools for quite sometime, I get the same education as public schools because right after I got transfer to a public school such as north side the school was on track on what I continued to learn so I guess some charter schools are on track on academic

  8. I don't think they should shut down charter schools because some kids like small schools and they wont get into fights.

  11. I don't thinkcharter schools should be revoked because yet, their might be some minor defects but every school has some as well. I personally asked my mom to move me to a charter school because i like the fact that the classes have a few students so then when I need help I can get the attention I need Not like public school you might not or just maybe get the chance of getting the teachers attention because of everything happening in his/hers surrounding. Some of the minor defects is that the school doesn't have enough money going into the school supplies, food, yellow buses, or enough to afford a gym/gym class. This can easily be fixed but others choose not to give money, which is not the schools fault but who ever suppose to "help" the charter schools. That is why I think charter schools shouldn't be revoked.

    1. I don't think they should do that because in public schools your just a number while at charter schools your a person.

  12. i think if there gonna revoke our school for accusations they should but theyll miss out on the little things they do and charter schools our the next innovative thing to our generation so taking accountablity for our case is resonable

  14. I admit, i'm kind of sad that charter schools might be shut down. Going to a charter school was really good for me because i have bad social anxiety so big crowds are not my thing, so just thinking about going to a public school kinda scares me. Plus going to a school this small kinda makes it feel like we're closer and sorta like a family. I know that sounds weird, but yeah.

  15. i don't think i should because it only has 4 classes so that means the classes are longer and gives use time to do missing assignments and homework and its easy are for people like me .But it doesn't have dances or alot of things.bad food .plus i want to leave this school and my parents wont let me.so this is my chance i just want to be a normal high school girl with prom ,dances and alot more classes .i just want to know how it feels.

  16. I do not think TEA should revoke charter schools. I have been in a charter school all my life. I haven't assisted a public school as of yet, so I really can't say if there is a difference between both. However, I don't think that I will be moving schools any time soon. I am quite happy with where I am at now. I like the small student to teacher ratio, and the fact that I recognize the people who I pass by out on the hallways. It's a small world here which helps in making new friends quickly. That's a good thing if you're very socially awkward. Also, they have a good watch over all of us since we're a small group unlike public schools. In public schools, you get lost easily, and you don't know your way too well, or at least I've heard. The education is pretty much the same wherever, but the funny thing is whenever people ask me what school I go to, they're impressed that I attend a charter school. Why? Well, supposedly charter schools provide better education. So, why revoke the charter schools when the students here are happy to be here. I understand that we are only students, but we do have a voice and we want to be heard....

  17. I think that charter schools are very well educated for their students. meaning in charter schools I feel as if they take their time on each student until they understand the learning process, being in the charter school at the time really benefits as a whole.
